What Clients Say
GROOMING FAQS
If your dog’s hair needs to be cut, we ask that you allow four hours so we can wash, dry, and cut the hair thoroughly. Matted hair may take longer. Haircuts done solely with clippers will generally be faster than those requiring hand scissors.
For a quick “in-and-out” grooming, we suggest coming at a specific time, usually first thing in the morning. There may be an additional charge for this expedited service.
If you’d like, we can call you when the groomer is finishing up, allowing you to pick up your dog right away.
To achieve an even haircut, the hair needs to be clean. Therefore, bathing your dog is always part of our grooming service.
Depending on your dog’s breed and desired style, the groomer may perform a “rough cut” first. This is a preliminary trim to prepare the coat for the final cut.
After the rough cut (if applicable), your dog will be washed, thoroughly dried, and then given the final haircut.
We use high-quality shampoos and conditioners. Most dogs are bathed with a hypoallergenic shampoo, but we can choose the most suitable one based on your dog’s specific needs. After washing and rinsing your dog thoroughly, we may also use a conditioner for a healthier coat.
We are happy to apply veterinary products following the veterinarian’s instructions precisely. Feel free to bring your preferred shampoo or other grooming products, and discuss your choices with your groomer for optimal results.
Yes, our groomers are familiar with most breed standards and highly experienced with popular breeds. To achieve a breed-standard groom, we recommend reviewing the relevant breed page in the “All Breed Dog Grooming Guide” with your groomer beforehand. Additionally, bringing pictures of your desired style can be helpful.
Remember, every dog is unique, and individual needs may vary. A consultation with your groomer will allow you to explore your options and make an informed decision.
Mats, or tangled fur, are unhealthy for your dog’s skin. When wet, mats tighten and become uncomfortable. Before washing, we thoroughly brush to remove any mats. However, sometimes mats are too close to the skin for safe brushing.
Dematting, the process of removing mats, can be stressful for both the dog and groomer. It often requires frequent breaks and may reveal underlying skin irritation. If your dog is matted, we’ll discuss your options.
If dematting is possible without causing discomfort, we can attempt to save the coat. This process may incur additional charges which will be consulted and agreed upon with the client.
In severe cases, a shorter haircut may be necessary using clippers to remove the mats.
To discuss the best approach for your matted dog, we recommend scheduling a consultation with one of our groomers beforehand.
Many clients choose to establish a relationship with a regular groomer. This is particularly beneficial for nervous dogs or those requiring specific styles. Consistent grooming by the same groomer fosters trust and comfort for both your dog and you.
While our grooming areas are visible, we kindly ask that you don’t wait directly where your dog can see you. Seeing their favorite person might cause them to become excited and try to reach you, which can be unsafe for both your dog and the groomer who uses sharp tools.
We understand you might be curious about the process, so feel free to take a quick peek from a designated waiting area at a safe distance.
Sure. The groomer will discuss your options and try to achieve the same result.
Yes, we can trim the nails of most dogs. However, some cases may require a veterinarian’s attention. Long nails can cause joint pain, broken nails, and other issues.
There’s always a small risk of bleeding during nail trimming. Inside the nail is a vein, called the “quick,” that grows with the nail. If a dog’s nails are long, even a slight trim can cause bleeding. Black nails make it harder to see the quick, increasing the risk.
If bleeding occurs, we use a styptic powder to stop it. Regularly trimming your dog’s nails significantly reduces the chance of bleeding, but it’s never entirely eliminated. It’s also recommended to avoid walks on rough surfaces immediately after a nail trim.
The short answer? Anal glands! These are scent sacs located near your dog’s tail. Some dogs express them naturally, while others don’t. Our groomers can check and express the glands if needed. Please let us know beforehand if your veterinarian typically handles this or if you prefer us not to.
Most dogs are dried using a combination of techniques to ensure a thorough and efficient process. Here’s a breakdown of the typical drying stages:
- In the tub: We might start by towel-drying to remove excess water. Additionally, a high-velocity dryer can be used to blow off most of the remaining moisture.
- Force dryer: Your dog will then be placed in a comfortable dryer that allows them to sit, lie down, or turn around while warm air circulates all around them.
- Finishing touches: The groomer may use a handheld dryer for final touches while your dog is on the grooming table.
Throughout the drying process, your dog will be closely supervised for their safety and comfort. These drying methods are all considered safe and have been widely used by professional groomers, veterinarians, and kennels for many years.
Your satisfaction is our priority! If you’re not completely happy with your dog’s haircut, and it’s a minor adjustment like needing a little more trimming in a specific area, the groomer can usually fix it right away.
For more significant changes, we might ask you to schedule a follow-up appointment to ensure the groomer has ample time to achieve the desired style.
To ensure clear communication, if multiple people have preferences regarding the haircut, it’s helpful to discuss and agree on a desired style before giving instructions to the groomer.
